Class Descriptions
6th Grade Choir
This class provides a variety of singing opportunities for students with limited to no choral experience. The year-long course is an introduction to musical concepts focusing on sight-singing, vocal technique, music theory, stage presence and musicianship. The class builds on students' limited knowledge and equips them with musical tools to ensure their first successful performance experiences. Students sing unison, two-part and three-part music in preparation for several concerts throughout the year, including the Choir Festival in April / May.
7/8th Grade Choir
This class provides a variety of singing opportunities for students with limited to advanced choral experience. The year-long course builds on students' prior knowledge to increase the depth of experiences. Choir focuses on sight-singing, vocal technique, music theory, stage presence and musicianship. Students sing two-part and three-part music in preparation for several concerts throughout the year, including 5th Grade Parent Night and Choir Festival.
7/8th Grade Drama
This class is an introduction to acting. It provides opportunities for students to build their acting skills through creating an ensemble. Drama students will work alone, in partners, as well as in groups, focusing on basic acting techniques, character and scene work, relationships on stage, motivation and improvisation exercises/games. Drama will help students improve verbal expression, enhance listening skills, build body awareness, increase interpersonal intelligence, and boost self-confidence. Students will record themselves acting, reflect as they watch and use the feedback to improve their performance.
6th Grade Music Appreciation
This trimester-long course is an introduction to musical concepts. Music Appreciation students study the roots of music beginning with the Middle Ages and continuing to the early 1900’s. Collaborating with their peers, students will learn how composers from the past influenced today’s music. While learning about instruments, students will have the opportunity to write their own piece of music using online digital tools. Other topics include; digital citizenship in music, copyright and planning an imaginary concert tour.
